Fall of the Evening Star
The Lorenthian Protectorate of Librarians
Known as Library, the Lorenthian Protectorate is the central region of the Elven country of Lorenthia. It is a massive city containing over 500,000 elves. It was founded by the great wizard Fal’Dorin in an effort to retain the knowledge of his people. Lorenthia had been plagued by thousands of years of war and many of it’s ancestral knowledge had been lost in the ongoing chaos. Fal’Dorin, disturbed at the thought of losing his life’s work in the ashes of battle, journeyed throughout the country recruiting the smartest and wisest wizards in all of Lorenthia. He took them deep into the Grey Mountains, to the highest peak, where they constructed a tower. At the top of the they created a blue torch, an everburning flame, that could be seen for hundreds of miles on a clear night. The tower itself was a library capable of storing hundreds of thousands of scrolls and books.
When people saw the flames many would come to investigate. Those brave enough to climb the mountain would tell their life story to the wizards. The wizards would add the book of their life to the library, were it was safe, protected for all time. Word spread quickly and many came to tell their story and read others stories. Through knowledge came understanding. Library was open to all. It grew, and as more people came they left other books and relics they wanted preserved as well. It became a sanctuary for all forms of knowledge.
Fal’Dorin later built a school at the base of the mountain where he could formally share the knowledge he had collected. For a time it was peaceful. It did not last however, eventually word traveled to the ear of a particularly ruthless general. Seeking to use the knowledge to conquer the country, he marched his army to the base of the mountain. The wizards were waiting for him. In a single day General Teltoth’s army was defeated.
In order to discourage future incursions. Fal’Dorin went to the King with a proposal. He wished to make Library a neutral state. In return he would become the personal wizard of the royal family. The king agreed.
The wizards of Library built a town at the base of the mountain and turned the mountain itself into a fortress. Over time the town grew and became prosperous. Founded on the principles of education many schools were built and eventually, the first Lorenthian College.
Thanks to Fal’Dorin’s guidance the King of Lorenthian eventually reestablished control of his country. As gratitude they released him from his obligation and requested that he share his guidance with the rest of the country. He returned to Library and created a second college and founded the Order of Librarians. The order’s objective was to spread the knowledge and wisdom found in Library throughout the rest of the country. With the order’s help Lorenthia began to thrive, it entered a golden era. To this day Library is the center of Lorenthian education, guiding it into even greater prosperity.
Currently the city of Library is governed by the Council of Head Librarians. Descendants of the founding wizards these families hold more influence and power than the royal family. Though Library is self governed, the Lorenthian government still depends on the Librarians for guidance and magical aid, though the wizards of Library are powerful they lack a standing army so the Librarians depend on Lorenthia for protection from those neighboring countries who would seek to take the knowledge by force. This mutually benificial relationship has been sustained for thousands of years. While Lorenthia has since opened it’s doors to settlers of other races it is still predominantly Elven. Library is exclusively an Elven state however, and its gates only open for Elves of Lorenthian blood. Realizing that all knowledge is valuable the Council created the Hall of Scribes with permission from the Lorenthian government. Located just beyond the border of Library it is open to anyone from anywhere. From the Hall any piece of information can be requested or delivered to Library proper. The Hall is also home to the Archivists, a group of Librarians that travel through out the world collecting knowledge and artifacts to add to the Grand tower.
